Hi,
Thanks for asking Big Al. I'll post a picture of the damaged screw; its more or less a standard slotted steel machine screw but I know I have nothing like it spare and I haven't a clue what the thread size is; I was rather busy stripping the head-stock. One possible solution would be to take it along to our local nut and bolt supplier and ask if they have anything similar or perhaps a hex head set screw with the correct thread because it would then be easy to reduce the head to correct dimensions; this will save playing around needlessly.
Many thanks Colin for the Stedall link which is brilliant. This Lorch might be even rarer than I first thought because it has its original stand with counter-shaft unit installed and all in working order. At least I guessed correctly when I said I thought Stedall must be the Lorch importers? My lathe boasts both Lorch Schmidt and Stedall nameplates which I will take a lot of trouble to retain.
Doing the actual restoration is taking up all my spare time but I will research a bit later to see what I can find out about my particular lathe because as yet I haven't seen a picture of one anywhere on the web.
I've now bought the new Brook Gryphon motor so this is another problem sorted.
Out of interest here's a Lorch I spotted on eBay; I'm sure this will fetch good money?

Happiness is a wreck of a cabinet to restore.
