Similar to the joint on this page Nick, the stock used for that joint isn't rebated or molded for storm/heavy weather use:

Normally the stock is rebated so as to overlap the window frame when the casement is shut, you also need to machine a water groove all round, draft and weather proof seal fixed in the frame not the casement
We had some cheapo softwood wooden double glazed windows of a similar construction prior to our upvc ones.
They endured some of the worst rain and wind you can get in the UK (we are quite high up near the coast) no leaks, no signs of joint sag whatsoever, they never got painted or varnished from new, they were in for about 4 years, only got rid of them because I hate painting, forget traditional glues for windows.
