I didn't see the key and keyway, only that funny bronze gear. That makes sense. My lathe has a clutch for the power feed also, but I've always assumed it wasn't meant to slip. It's tricky: there's a fluted knob which you turn clockwise (I think) to engage the clutch, but as the knob is already turning slowly CW when the feed tumbler is engaged, you have to turn it faster than it's already going. However to disengage it quickly you only have to stop it from turning. In practice, I so rarely use power feed that I forget just how it goes.
