In my case, it is the only way my 60-year old housebound ill sister can remain in contact - she is badly disabled but remains living independently because our local carer services are disgustingly poor. Therefore, I get in a muck sweat when my phone service is lost. I had planned to go out to the theatre that evening, but cancelled so that I could stay by the landline.
For my family at least it is an essential service and has saved her life twice in the past 3 years.
