I used a similar thing when I dropped a special bolt in a marine diesel generator crankcase, way back in the late 70s. I could just see it projecting out of the sump oil and so tied a large magnet (taken out of a float switch) to a piece of stout wire and fished, while looking via the light/mirror thingy. Before I had successfully retrieved the bolt, I brought up an assortment of nuts, washers and split pins. So it was obvious that a lot of people had done the same as me and dropped things down there. In my case, the special bolt was one we didn't have spares for on board and we were at least 5 days sailing from one. Needs must!
