The burning looks to me like it has been caused by a short circuit in the instrument that has overloaded it.
There will be another fault to fix before the resistor can be replaced otherwise it will just burn again.
Where is the power supply mounted?
Is it in the instrument or in a separate box?
A photo of the inside of the instrument will be needed if it is not just a badly wired plug that has caused the problem.
