I would have been tempted to do a repair.
I have a coil out of an old cattle fence and I use it with a pulsing circuit to keep unwanted visitors off the seedlings in my veg plot. It has worked well for many years for this.
I have in the past used it to test TV tubes. Just apply heater volts and put the output onto the final anode and there will be a circular spot that blinks each time you pulse the coil. I never had a tube tester in the 1970s.
Focusing could be added but I did not do this at the time.
