Yes! that's my take on it too David. Not struggle for an exact copy on components but aim for a period look.
On a dial I would try much harder and select the best font and then tweak it. CorelDraw is fabulous for this: Fonts can be any size down to 1/10s of a size and whole words can be stretched out and even individual letters moved to increase the spacing.
