Duck and game calls are quite a thing on ‘the other side of the pond’. A few years ago I bought an American book on making duck and game calls after a demonstration at our woodturning club. Never got round to making any, but the book might be of interest - you can read a few pages of it here:

On the wider topic of making things in wood which make a noise, there’s a video of youtube with other links, by a guy called Steve Ramsey, for making a four note train whistle, with the free plans available too. Nice project for anyone who has acquired a band-saw, but don’t follow his band-saw techniques if you want to remain attached to your fingers! Good fun for little kids, or regressive adults!

He has a website ‘WWMM’ – ‘Wood Working for Mere Mortals’ and uploads a video each Friday, usually on making something from nothing, such as old pallets. He’s one of those effusive ‘larger than life’ 'high as a kite' Americans (a bit in the vein of ‘Cap’n Eddie’), who Brits don’t always take kindly to, and probably think he’s been at the Evostik or felt-tip pens again, but in a dismal world, it’s good to know that there are a few characters around who don’t take life too seriously. Don’t like? Don’t watch!
