This biggest variac I've ever sees was a 3 phase job. It was 3 variacs ona common shaft and must have stood at least 30" high so each phase was quite a lump. It was in Eric Laithwaite's "heavy" lab at Imperial College and I saw it used to control some linear motor experiments back in the mid 1970s.
