Hi,
Working the compound gear train out on one of these lathes Refugee is only part of the story. The gears will need cleaning before installing and the lead-screw also needs cleaning. Accurately grinding an HSS tool steel bit takes time then it needs aligning in the offset top slide holding the tool post. Cutting a single thread as a one off job can easily end up in half a days work which of course to a lathe owner in his/her own workshop is treated as a hobby. A couple of years ago I emailed Tufnol in Birmingham enquiring how much they would charge me for a single lathe (Myford) head-stock main bearing bush turned from Whale Tufnol? This bush was nothing special and it's a good job I was sitting down because the quote was £150 plus VAT plus postage.
I'll need to learn how to use this Lorch lathe because some of the controls are unfamiliar to me and I can't see how to index thread cutting because there doesn't appear to be a dial for engaging the half nuts? Firstly of course I need to spend many hours getting the lathe into full working order which I'm currently trying to do.
I'd love to help everyone out with small jobs especially if the job involves working on the lathe but I simply don't have enough hours in a day for my own jobs and once the bit of warmer weather arrives I'm always working flat out on the bungalow or in the gardens. It's just started to pour with rain so I've had to put the car away before it gets a soaking; I daren't leave the car out overnight because of active burglars so I suffer for other peoples misdoings.
If you repair cameras on a regular basis Refugee and the thread you wish to cut is a standard thread associated with cameras it might pay you to obtain the few tools needed and then you won't be slowed down?
The threads I cut are much smaller than an inch the largest being 12mm so I have a good selection of taps up to this size but few dies because for many jobs where a shaft end requires a thread its much easier to drill and tap for a set screw.
Many thanks Big Al for your input. Sorting threads sizes out can be a nightmare because there are so many different profiles; I just want a thread on so and so? here's an example;
