Re pipe-clips, I just checked to see if they still use the term for 'stand-off' clips, which I thought was quaint even when I started as an apprentice back in 1954 'School Board' clips.
They were apparently given that term in the early 1900s - which sticks to the present day - because School Boards insisted on pipework being spaced from the wall so they couldn't harbour dust and germs. (Still didn't stop kids being treated with that ghastly purple 'gentian violet' ointment on sores on their faces, hands and arms, and being ostracised as 'lepers' by other kids - nothing to do with pipe-clips of course!). Happy days
(A bit like the term 'hospital radiators' which were smooth cast iron radiators and each single column could be reached through with a hand duster).
