Indeed - flap wheel too are really quite ferocious. 60/80G will make short work or rust or paint, then you need to use finer ones - 120.
They soon wear out but at a tenner for ten and free P&P are cheap as chips, so it's no big deal:

(You can get smaller ones for detail work).
For removing paint, 'Paramose' is ferocious stuff - far better than Nitromors. Not especially easy to find as it's for industrial rather than domestic use, but a google search will find it. (JC Penny I think).
Paraffin and a paintbrush is as good as anything for de-greasing.
