For me Joe the restoration is what the hobby is largely about. Yes! I read radio history and know quite a lot about UK and US makers. Also, I take time to understand different circuit techniques and that why I prefer radios before 1939 for UK and 42 for US. After that it is all pretty much standard.
But when us old boys pass on, although you are younger, you wont be able to take in all the old radios that will be available so where are they going to go? The Radio Museum wont want them: they are full up like the rest of us. For loads it will be back in garages and damp sheds.
The ones that will stand the best chance of a warm home are ones that are attractive, well finished and that the lady of the house likes...
I'm really chuffed if I can sell or even give a radio to someone who isn't into the hobby but just likes it for the nostalgia and its beauty, particularly if they are a bit younger than me. It has only happened once.
I even restored a really good radio and offered it back to the person who gave it to me as a gift and they said "No! you keep it".
Sorry! I'm not a glass half full person but thats how I see it.
