Oh dear, my advice is don't fiddle around with any other adjustments, only the one in IFT2, that should be adjusted for maximum signal, what you describe sounds like the adjustment core, commonly referred to as the tuning slug, if you do adjust it do not force it as it might break, it will be made of ferrite, ideally use something non metallic to adjust it, the favourite DIY tool is a plastic knitting needle with the end filed to shape to fit the slot in the core.
Once you have done that then try to ascertain if the signal is stronger than before your fiddling or about the same.
In your type of receiver accurate alignment of all the IFT's is not really possible without an RF signal generator, besides that, there might be another fault that has caused the resonant frequency of the IFT to be at a different point.
If you want to pursue the hobby of old radios then an RF signal generator is a must have, an RF signal generator is not the same as a DIY signal injector that was mentioned in earlier posts.
