OK - thats the battery eliminated.
Next thing I would try are the "Medium" and "Long" waveband buttons. Try pushing them quite firmly several times each, switching from one band to the other, and see if you can tune in a station after that.
Almost certainly the contacts of the switches will be dirty and possibly not making good contact. Hopefully operating them several times will clean them a bit and allow the set to work.
See what happens anyway.
