OK - You've got a Mk.I TR82C there then, with an A177 chassis (image attached), which uses OC series transistors. So the problem is not due to a shorting AF11x transistor as was speculated, because it doesn't contain any!

Usually the Mk.I TR82C is quite reliable and often works when you connect up a battery no matter how much rough treatment its received.

First of all, how are you powering the set? Is it with a fresh PP9 9 volt battery (as it should be) or are you using something like a much smaller PP3 instead?

The above may sound like a silly question, but PP9's have become quite difficult to obtain and its quite common to find a PP3 pressed into service as a substitute. If so, the no-tune problem may simply be down to insufficient voltage/current, as a PP3 isn't up to the job and won't last long - especially if it isn't fresh to begin with. So its important to eliminate the battery as the problem before we delve deeper.
