I went with fixed hinges in the end. I did some testing with the become apart ones but there was too much play and since the top and bottom of the case are not held aligned in any way, it relies on the hinges. If I had used them the top would be 'wobbly' and that wouldn't do at all!
I'll make a short cable/string to hold the lid just off the vertical when I'm using the gadget.

So now I'll shoot some clear coat and put it all back together and then on to the next challenge.
