I don't think the badge means a thing as some manufacturers can go down-hill and others improve over time.
I have some appalling Sheffield-made tools and some fantastic cheapo Chinese things.
All I know is that I've been disappointed with expensive goods, not just electricals, far more often than with cheap stuff. My MP3 player cost twenty quid from Aldi. At that time an i-Pod was about £150. I'm not claiming one wouldn't be better but I don't see how it can be seven-and-a-half times better.
