Thanks Gary; I do normally check online for stock levels at our local Screwfix but the items I wanted today I thought surely these must be in stock? I still like Screwfix though and usually have no problems but its been one of those days today; we visited Barnsley this morning usually a 20 minute run but this morning it took forever; a junction had three way traffic signals resulting in huge tailbacks and as we finally passed the roadworks there wasn't a workman in sight? That just started the day off on the right foot.
Yes Gary and Big Al; 3,000 rpm isn't hanging around but I felt tempted to take it up to 3,500 rpm because this I believe is quite common on woodturning lathes and at 3,000 rpm the Graduate just purrs contentedly. Woodturning is a great deal different to metal turning; turning metal at this speed without coolant would possibly see a white hot tool bit within seconds before it expired. I wouldn't dare to chuck the lump of cast iron I collected for you Alan and spin it up to 3,000 rpm; I'm sure even a Colchester would walk around quite briskly? Woodturning however the high speed obviously in relation to diameter being turned gives a much cleaner cut; I think a tool "dig in" is also greatly reduced because of the rapid removal of material. Common sense must prevail though and I would never recommend a novice woodturner to run at such a speed until the basics of tool use are grasped. One of my last turning jobs was to turn a set of four oak legs and I was using the DML24" at middle speed whatever this was and I was not having a lot of success so I set for top speed and it made a tremendous difference. Tools must also be sharp.
I've added a reverse function to the Graduate partly because it was freely available through the VFD but reversing can help during final sanding.
I do appreciate all the replies and I've learnt more from them regarding pots and their use. Now I know the voltage range from stop to full speed wouldn't it be possible to simply add a correct pot say of around 40K using the 10V feed?
Once I get full sweep of the pot and all is working correctly I'll update the details for others who have or will have the same problem to save them the time I've spent on this.
I still haven't painted the garage ceiling but I have bought the paint in readiness; tomorrow I'll play around with this VFD a bit more and I'll connect the new 10K WW pot and using Refugees figures will experiment a bit with the second 10K pot using the rev counter on the VFD as reference. It's such a pity Huanyang didn't reply with a simple solution but these days this is common; once a seller has the money that's job done? I wouldn't hesitate in buying another of these excellent VFD's as they really are most impressive.
