Thanks for asking Lawrence. No the speed is different because I set the frequency to give around 2250 rpm whereas the motor plate states 1690 rpm at 60HZ. Please be aware though that I'm working from memory because the motor is buried in the pedestal and access to the nameplate is denied.
1690 rpm might seem a strange speed but this motor was retrieved from the scrap bin at Brooks. I had access to lots of motors; many were prototypes (W Series) others were sent to our research department for full testing such as load testing and noise; these motors were then discarded and I had colleagues on the lookout for such motors for me. I had full permission to bring any of these motors home on the condition that I never sold them using them entirely for my own purposes which I've done to this day.
I used to raid the scrap bins and when the main stores disposed of boxes of set screws etc the store guys would leave these on a shelf for me to collect if of use to me; I had access to all the departments and the guys were always willing and happy to help me out with turning jobs such as metal spraying and returning a shaft to original spec; bearings; pulleys and drive belts I used to simply ask for and be given; such items were used in bulk and would cost me only a thank you.
In return I lived and breathed Brook Motors every day of the year because I couldn't switch off and I made many things at home out of the parts I had been given for the benefit of Brooks so it was a win win situation.I also used to buy machines at scrap value to play around with; my activities were well known; I never abused my position at Brooks and always did my best for the company up to my retirement.
I used this motor and VFD on the Jubilee lathe and I know the VFD works well with the motor because on manual control using the VFD buttons the VFD behaved as expected for each parameter change; I could adjust the speed up to 10,000 rpm without trouble.
The problem arose when I added the remote controls; the forward/stop/reverse work perfectly but the pot just isn't quite right and I think the fault is down to me in not understanding what I'm looking for in the instruction manual as a couple of examples; Parameter PD130 Number of auxiliary pump; Parameter PD156 Proportional constant (P). This is totally beyond me and to be honest I'm not even interested in gaining a degree in VFD's. I want basic functions only to run my Graduate and as Nick says these VFD's are way beyond basic?
The parameter range goes up to PD250 with many being factory set but this leaves a great deal of parameters to play around with and these parameters each have a number of adjustable settings; if I had the time to spare I could enjoy playing with one of these VFD's just for the fun of it but I want my Graduate running so that I can move onto other jobs.
I wanted to paint the garage ceiling today but another day has slipped by; tomorrow I've some running around to do; being retired is hectic.
