Hi Gents, I seem to have started a good discussion. Some, but not all microwave transformers will have airgaps in the lams. These may work very well for battery chargers and have a self regulating characteristic; but will not be much use for phase converters unless they can be re-laminated without the airgap.
Colin, angle grinder trick should work well to free welded lams, but clean off all raggy edges; if the lams do not butt closely together the no-load current will be high. (this is catered for in gapped welder transformers by having a higher than usual t/v on the pri).
