The Bosch engineer who changed the lamp in our microwave also pointed out a large capacitor that should he checked was completely discharged by putting a heavily insulated pair of pliers across it. I imagine if you left one off for a day or so that would also be safe but I would still do the plier trick.
I thought it a daft design that the bulb couldn't simply be replaced from the outside once the outer casing was off. But maybe it has to be that way to keep emissions to the minimum.
