When I was with the IBA back in the early 80s there was a guy experimenting on 23GHz with regular links of over 150 miles from Butser hill (Portsmouth) into France.
I don't remember the location there. This was also with mW O/P. Antennas for the uW bands were nowhere near as good as today and were hellishly expensive.
