Rob,
whilst Trevor has given a very good account of a modification to alleviate modulation hum, (believe me I wish i knew what Steve and Trevor have forgotten)! I realise you may not yet grasp the whole theory (or want too), do not be disheartened (Don't tell anyone but I still put x2 rated caps in where they should be)! And what Steve says is true, after all at rusty radios the Dac90 worked without it, you proved that as you fixed it! But if you want to follow the circuit to understand what is happening, then put an X2 cap in..........or not, just make sure the voltage rating is sufficient.
Taking nothing away from Trevor and Steve, they know many short cuts. Personally I find it helps me in understanding the circuit to put the X2 cap back in, and the original designer of the circuit put it there.
I accept it was done because of the mains but it was there.
Just my thoughts.
cheers Mark
