There should not be a diode involved with the mains filter.
The capacitor shown in the photo will be rated at 200V DC and will blow instantly on mains.
I would stick with a filtered mains extension lead. At least it can be made into a normal one if the capacitor fails and new ones are cheap these days.
Mains filter capacitors have had a bad reputation for many years and are best kept away from hard to gret switches and circuitry. They do quite often cover the inside of the set with black slime that could contain burned foil. That would play havoc in a scope especially close to the focus control.
