Thanks for the comments guys.
The cheeks of the former as it stands are of card, and at one end the card is also the end cheek of the adjacent hum bucking coil - just a few turns of thicker gauge cotton covered wire. I intend to make new cheeks from 1mm thick Paxolin. Interesting to note how they terminated the 38SWG wire. It's joined onto three strands of the same wire, then that it turn is joined onto a bit of thicker tinned copper wire for the lead-outs. Makes sense rather than to join one fragile wire to the lead-out, but really, I'm not overly impressed with the crudeness of the construction of the coil. I'll most likely find a way of attaching two solder tags to terminate the coil, and to make the connections to the HT.
I've attached a couple of pics of the coil to show the termination and the hum bucking coil.
I won't be doing anything at it for a week or so as we're off to our elder son and his family tomorrow in London. He's in South Africa on business just now - gets back Saturday. I'm looking forward to his reaction when he sees our new Skoda parked alongside his Aston Martin DB9. Bang goes the neighbourhood! He'll just have to explain to the neighbours that we're a bit 'Northern'.
