Yeah, sorry Alan I realized that afterwards whilst sipping my tea as the input doesn't appear to be polarized for a slim bottom contact battery.
Yes that board looks a bit heatable with high voltage through R.
The PCB assembly looks late 70's to mid 80's (ish) ?
The case is not the usual army colour..... navy, diplomatic, home service/police maybe?
