Normally the Dulux gloss goes on well for me too Lawrence and I don't know the reason why it didn't smooth out like it normally does on the wide window board. It will be interesting though to learn how long it takes before your Dulux white gloss turns yellow?

Thanks Refugee; yes I could buy one of these initially expensive vacs second hand through eBay thereby saving a great deal of money but it makes me wonder why someone would spend over £1,000 on such a vac then sell it at such a reduced price through eBay. I'd rather buy a cheaper vac and use the rest of the money either spoiling Bron because she deserves it or buying some more good quality kit for the garage or workshop. The Fein Multimaster Top I've just bought is a top quality power tool and at £210 I could buy five of such tools for the price of one of these vacs.

There must be some good sales people out there if they can sell these vacs and as you say Refugee they are selling on commission so will be giving the hard sell.

Most new vacs appear to have lots of filters and these filters block up so easily. Our newest vac is an upright Bissell and given that it has a number of filters why is it covered in dust? The small Electrolux I bought for the garage costing around £17 and after owning it only a short while it expired. The speed control slide pot had become choked with dirt and failed so I replaced this with a fixed resistor and it's worked perfectly for for about three years; I could have returned it under guarantee but the postage would have cost as much as the vac cost in the first place? The big VAX is a beauty and only cost £25 second hand.

Regarding keeping the garage or workshop tidy I find the biggest aid is a simple Poundland plastic dustpan and hand brush; these don't have filters or any electronic parts to burn out and power cuts don't stop them working; I find them ideal for cleaning up as work progresses and this is an easy habit to adopt. This works for me but others have their own ways of working.

I have a big home made 3 phase dust/chip extractor in the garage and this has proved its worth for over ten years; hooking it up to the Startrite combi drastically cuts down the fog I used to have to endure.

I used to like Martindale nuisance dust masks the ones with the aluminium support but I've not seen them for years. A couple of days ago I browsed the web and found a supplier so I added four boxes to the shopping basket thinking I'll get a good stock and tried to place the order. My order was rejected because at the checkout there is a minimum order value of £25?

I'm considering experimenting when I start woodturning again because woodturning generates lots of fine dust; I'd like to rig up an outside fixed air supply plastic pipe reducing the diameter to fit a full face mask via a flexible hose whilst incorporating an inline low power fan to provide an air wash across my face; a quick connector could be used for hooking up but at the moment it's only an idea. Such masks are available battery powered but are expensive.

I've applied gloss paint outside over the last two days and it hasn't rained; what's going on; my personal black cloud must have finally taken a hike?
