Thanks Lawrence. I've been away from the PC for a lot of the day. It's now 11.45 p.m. Thought I just have a quick look round before turning in for the night. 
I reckon that Adobe Reader itself is contributing to this problem: note "contributing"; not wholly 'responsible'. The version I am now using is v.9.5.2. This is most recent version that will run on this PC (according to Adobe) - which runs Windows 2000 + SP4. And there I suspect lies part of the problem: this pdf wants a more recent version of Adobe Reader, but such a version is not compatible with my O/S; Adobe probably wants me to run Win_XP or a later version of Windows.
If that is indeed the case, then in my book that doesn't say much for Adobe Reader: such programs should be backwardly-compatible. But then again, I don't care much for Adobe Reader and the way it is designed to work anyway.
O.K. - I'll now have a look at the individual sheets that you have kindly posted.
