'M' to denote 1,000; reasoning: 'M' stands for 1,000 in Roman numerals. The use of 'M' as a multiplier = 1,000 seems to have been exclusive to the USA, which I find quite strange. If anything, you would have expected a European country to use 'M'.
Anybody have any ideas how and why the use of 'M' for that purpose began?
Just fascinated; I have no real need to know.
