Some time ago I made a capacitance meter from a neat little kit, (as did Alan Beckett and maybe others on the forum), which I posted a thread about on the forum. As the display is LED rather than LCD and would take more current, I fitted a battery pack of six cells rather than use a PP3. It' was working fine the other day, then when I tried it last night - nothing. I thought that a bit odd as if the batteries were just running down, I'd have expected the display to go dim before the meter stopped working.
I took the lid off and found that the flimsy plastic battery box had split open at one end, presumably due to the constant pressure of the springs on the battery connections. I've had this happen on other equipment numerous times and I really can't think why the boxes can't be made more robust, which I wouldn't have thought would add much cost. Even if it doubled the price it would be no big deal.
Huh - who wants cheap if it only comes in one quality - cheap 'n nasty?
