I know it may sound like heresy, but rather than get annoyed and blow up lots of devices...
...why not use LTspice and simulate the circuit (actually quite easy when you get the hang of it). You can home in on a working solution much faster that way... when you're closer to what you want, THEN build it... saves a lot of aggro...
There's a lot of help out there for various spice implementations - LTspice (also known as SwitcherCAD) is completely free (from Linear Technology), actively maintained and has a great support group on Yahoo! http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/LTspice/
