Might have been mentioned here before, but Tektronix do a free manual called "The XYZ of Oscilloscopes".
They've done this for many years - it gets updated with each iteration of the technology, so the earlier versions (more relevant here) deal with valve scopes and associated techniques; the most recent versions are pretty much all digital.
