I have been on the lookout for a transformer from an old bit of test gear to use for a bench power supply.
The regulator would be based on a pair of 800V FETs out of an old computer power supply and a zena diode.
Just arrange for the tap in the potential divider to be at the zena voltage when the output is what you want. The resistor values just need to be high enough to avoid them over heating. The FETs will be OK as long as the one that passes the full output currant is on a heat sink.
