I am part way through building myself a winder based on an ice cream maker motor/gearbox.
The turns counter started off 30 years ago as the base for a home made frequency counter that never got completed. Then it was a capacitance meter using a constant currant and two voltage sensors that also never got finished.
This third go at finding it a job has got it counting the rotations and switching the motor off at the final count.
It uses an reflective opto device that looks like a 4 pin TO18 with a red shiny top to sense the turret rotation under the deck. The sensor can be seen on the bit of paper on top of the counter.
The photo was taken before the sensor was fitted.
