Yes, guitar players are very particular as to what sounds like what, there might be a few myths flying around on that subject but from a physics point of view there is probably a lot going on ie: string type/composition, tension, harmonics, there relationship to six inductors in series, all tied up yet interdependant? It depends I guess as to what sound you want out of the guitar, screeming guitar solos, heavy blues/rock, punk, folk, wiered stuff etc or even a Bert Weedon sound.
Apart from Hendrix my other guitar hero was the late Stevie Ray Vaughn, one of his main tricks to get the sound he required and the bending of the notes/chords etc was fit his Statocaster with heavy strings and detune the lot half a note or so, he might have had pickups made to match that.
