The VM77B, of which I haven't got an example, is the odd one out as it's 'Horizontal' not 'Vertical' - see attached.
Unfortunately the Manual has no internal views so I don't know how it's built. However, the Circuit is near identical to the VM77. Perhaps the VM77 was just too difficult to build and repair so they redesigned it mechanically.
