Good story Big Al; I reckon we've all been there and I still go there?
As an apprentice; my fellow apprentice Roger and I once spent a day drilling lots of 3/4" clearance holes into RSJ's for assembly underground only to end up in trouble with the engineers once they returned into the workshop; we had measured from hole to hole and definitely dropped ourselves into a big hole.
Thanks Lawrence; £100 quid a week sounds a good deal and I promise to behave.
Regarding your idea Lawrence about modifying a small syncro cone/gear for de clutching? No it's not a nutty idea at all but I really want to keep this clutch as simple as possible using readily available parts and as a tight Yorkshire-man it must be cheap.
