We can never be sure that they are not "one time programmable" chips that cost less to manufacture shoved into what looks like a regular memory stick.
If the files were copied onto the sticks with backup software the engineering password will be required in order to delete them. If this is the case even Linux may ask for the root password before it will act.
Next time I see the broken 250 meg SD I have got I will try again with Linux from the engineering menu.
For reference I have seen a rare RED screen of death in Linux.
I did manage to fix it though.
