OK, found 'Eject' as an option, also 'Safely Remove' is there as well (I've been previously trying the latter via the taskbar icon)
So I've gone through the sequence unset Read-only, delete, eject, safely remove.
Guess what - the data is all still there!
I don't seem to have a recycle bin on the stick - the only folder shown is 'Documents'
I think I might buy another couple of sticks from a different source.
Incidentally I have a couple of 16GB sticks which don't cause any problems deleting data - is there a clue there?
