I forgot, and have omitted an integral part of the veneer repair.
As it was on a corner and had to be bent to shape, against the natural bend of the veneer, see here;

I tried steaming over a kettle, a pan and anything I could find! but failed to get the veneer to bend as I wanted!
Getting frustrated I accidentally dropped the piece of veneer into the pan of boiling water (fortunately Maud was not in at the time).
Fishing it out with the tweezers I had been using to hold it, I found the veneer piece gave a little in the way it needed to bend. So a couple more dippings and bending to shape with finger pressure gave the correct shape.
I did consider making clamps and all sorts, but this had the desired effect.
