A search though their database took me to the SL-C20: it looks the same model.
I see that amongst the more common problems, they list the 'drive pendulum' as having 'ceased up' as a typical cause of the fault. They go on to say that it is "easy to replace" (perhaps a clean & lube will do), but don't explain where it is or how you get to it.
I'll have a quick look at the machine in question now: access / removal / refit might be easier than I imagine (although knowing Sony, I doubt it
).

O.K., I've had a 'quick look' - and as I suspected, trying to gain access to the mechanics is the usual nightmare: no progress can be made.
