Hi,
You could always buy a lathe Gary assuming you had space for one which is the easy part; gaining skill though means making all the many mistakes every novice to a lathe makes but with practice the basics are soon picked up; if using a skew chisel you'll need to be quick at ducking until you get the hang of it. I hope to have my Jubilee wood-turning lathe up and running as soon as the weather lets me into the garage in peace.
It's many years since I saw the back knife lathe and I was surprised how easy it was to find videos showing them in use; wood-turning is a fascinating hobby in its own right and there are many excellent wood-turning groups around the country; David is a very active member of such a group and I know David does some excellent work as Bron and I have some of his work to prove it.
I'm always interested in machinery and here is another video but this time showing how rosettes are mass produced on a dedicated machine;

It must be heaven to have a large workshop powered by a water wheel and line shafting to each machine via fast and loose pulleys. I can always dream.
