Oh dear; Oh dear; I'm so sorry Mark; I must have been on a different planet because I missed this excellent restoration completely. So much to do and so little time; I do try to keep up but find viewing everything on the forum would fill my day.
It was a pleasure to see the finished article though and not realizing the amount of work and time you have put in on restoring it I never even noticed the patched veneer so top marks for this. I've finally fully read this thread and it is a delight to me to see you getting stuck into a "woody" Mark and making such a good job of it; I bet you do many more because once you see what you can achieve you will only want to do better and better with each one; cabinetwork is very addictive once you achieve such fine results.
What a splendid effort with patching the veneer as well; you took the hardest route and it is an honest repair so credit also to you for this especially as the damage was on a corner.
Isn't it truly wonderful Mark when you wipe over with Raw Linseed Oil and see the colours jump out at you; this stage always gives me such a buzz and the crowning glory to go for a shellac finish.
If this is your first attempt it can only encourage others to have a go because it is remarkable and the results speak for themselves; I'm so pleased you brought it along and I was able to see it close up. I keep banging on about if I can restore a woody then anyone can and here you are proving the point.
Very well done indeed Mark and please let me know the next time you tackle such a project then I'll certainly watch your work in progress; cabinetwork can be extremely frustrating but ever so rewarding to be able to stand back and admire such a result; I'm impressed.
