If you have critical data on the drive, look up a data recovery firm and get them to retrieve the data off the drive for you. They do things like open the drive in a clean room, remove the platters and read the data off each one to recover the info.

Last time I had this done (a few years ago) it cost me (the company,anyway) over GBP 2,000 (+VAT).

Its not a cheap exercise...
