Thanks for you kind comment re- the cabinet, in the past I have used spray laquer with good results, however I was looking for a low/non odour product, this water based poly can be applied in several ways. I use a piece of cotton cloth folded into a pad and put it on sparingly. It dries very quickly and so several coats can be done in a day. I found a Company on the internet called Wood Finishes Direct .com, with whom I have no association, they were very helpful on the telephone with an interest in what I was trying to achieve . I tried their satin finish first but thought it too glossy and so have used the matt which looks satin to me. You can of course easily mix them and also thin them with water.
My next new attempt is to repair a bakelite cabinet!!
