Belkin stuff generally has a good reputation, but 5 years isn't bad for something that runs hot and is made to a price.
Plusnet supplied me with a D-Link router when I finally got broadbad, and it lasted just over 12 months. The fault was the power supply - I ran it from a bench PSU for a few days, then ordered a replacement from CPC, which has been fine for the last 2-3 years (I'm going to regret saying that!).
Plug-top powers supplies lasting close to 12 months is pretty common in my experience - I had the same thing with the TVonics units that came with their "Prism" set top boxes. Again, a replacement from CPC was cheap enough - I didn't bother trying to kick up a fuss. In most cases, it's easy enough to open them up and replace the capacitors.
Anyway, don't overlook the possibility that the PSU might be on its last legs. And there might be capacitors inside the router itself that are past their best.
Cheers,
Mark
