Joe, thanks for the offer, but as I've already bought the external hub I'll see how that behaves.
I'll not start tinkering until I get an answer to my original question, though.
My feeling is that there should be no surprises with USB, but then I don't really have much affinity with computers, I just want to use it as a tool.
