Thanks Nick; I have a lot to learn but anything is welcome if it tightens up my computer security as it pays to be as careful as possible.

I'm interested in "TOR" and have just had a nosy but Joe has started a new thread covering online security so perhaps TOR could be discussed more fully there?

Before switching my old computer off for the last time; I completely wiped the 80GB HDD then re-installed a fresh copy of WinXP after formatting; this won't render the HDD safe but at least it goes some way.

I'm surprised the subject of buying and using modern computers hasn't been fully covered previously unless of course it has and I've missed it.
